World Diabetes Day is being observed today in Nepal and various countries around the globe with a range of awareness programs. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about diabetes risks, prevention, and treatment.
The United Nations initiated the observance of this day in 2007. The UN has been encouraging member states to formulate national policies according to their health systems to prevent and manage diabetes.
According to the World Health Organization, in 2014 there were 422 million adults living with diabetes worldwide, compared to just 108 million in 1980. Diabetes has been increasing due to obesity, unhealthy lifestyles, and lack of physical activity. Healthy eating, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking and alcohol are key measures to prevent this disease.
The global health agency has emphasized that countries must prioritize long-term health policies, public awareness, and the creation of lifestyle-friendly environments to curb the rising prevalence of diabetes.
