A court in South Korea has sentenced former President Yoon Suk-yeol to life imprisonment on charges of plotting treason.
The 65-year-old former leader had attempted to impose martial law in December 2024, a move that ultimately failed. The martial law declaration he announced while serving as president lasted only six hours. Facing widespread opposition from Parliament, he was forced to withdraw the decision.
Following the incident, Yoon was impeached and removed from office, and legal proceedings were initiated against him. On Thursday, a court in Seoul handed down a life sentence in the treason case.
After the verdict, his supporters staged protests outside the court premises.
Yoon is already in prison in connection with another case related to the same incident.
On December 3, 2024, while still serving as president, he had attempted to enforce martial law in the country.
A special prosecutor had argued that his actions posed a direct threat to democracy and had sought the death penalty in the case.
