A Nepali-origin American police officer has been killed in a shooting incident in the U.S. state of Georgia.
The incident occurred early Sunday morning local time in Gwinnett County, where 25-year-old police officer Pradeep Tamang, serving with the Gwinnett County Police Department, was fatally shot while on duty. Another officer who was on duty with him was seriously injured.
According to Gwinnett County Police, at around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, a police team including Tamang was dispatched to East Park Place Boulevard to investigate a fraud-related complaint. While the officers were at the scene, a 35-year-old suspect, Kevin Andrews, opened fire indiscriminately on the police team. Tamang was critically injured in the shooting and later died during treatment, the department confirmed. The suspect Andrews was also injured in return fire from the police.
Officer Tamang and Master Police Officer David M. Reed were both seriously injured in the incident. The department has confirmed that Tamang succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Tamang had joined the police service in July 2024 and graduated from the police academy as part of the 121st batch in May 2025 before beginning field duty. The injured officer, David M. Reed, has been serving with the department since 2015.
