A four-year-old girl has died after being hit by a vehicle carrying a candidate of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in Rautahat constituency number 2. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon during election campaigning when a car carrying RSP candidate Sagir Alam struck the child.
The deceased has been identified as Alpha Khatun, a four-year-old resident of Mathiya, Ishnath Municipality-4. According to the Rautahat District Police Office, the accident took place at around 2:30 pm when a car bearing registration number Ba 15 Cha 4244, which was heading out for door-to-door campaigning, hit the child. The vehicle was reportedly speeding, and the impact left the girl critically injured.
Following the accident, the driver himself rushed the injured child to the Provincial Hospital in Gaur for treatment. However, after doctors declared her dead, the driver fled from the hospital premises. Hospital sources said the child had sustained severe injuries to her head and internal organs.
Confirming the incident, Rautahat police spokesperson and Deputy Superintendent of Police Bishnu Pradip Basyal said a search is underway to locate the driver. “We have taken the vehicle involved in the accident under control,” DSP Basyal said, adding that the driver is absconding and efforts are ongoing to arrest him. He also stated that the candidate would be questioned in connection with the incident.
Following the incident, locals in the Mathiya area have expressed anger, blaming reckless driving by candidates’ vehicles during election campaigns for the rise in accidents. They have demanded strict action against those responsible. RSP candidate Sagir Alam has not issued any official statement so far.
Police have kept the body at the hospital for post-mortem examination, while the victim’s family has demanded compensation and is preparing to launch protests.
