The House of Representatives of Nepal is scheduled to elect the Deputy Speaker today during its meeting at 4 PM.
Two candidates are contesting for the post:
- Saraswati Lama from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP)
- Rubee Kumari Thakur from the Shram Sanskriti Party
Only these two nominations were registered within the designated deadline.
Rubee Kumari Thakur’s candidacy was proposed by Aryan Rai of the Shram Sanskriti Party and supported by Ashok Kumar Chaudhary of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Ambika Devi Niraula of the Shram Sanskriti Party.
Similarly, Saraswati Lama filed her nomination with the support of Gyan Bahadur Shahi as proposer, and RPP lawmakers Khushbu Oli, Tahir Ali, and Bharat Giri as supporters.
The ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party holds a clear majority in the House. In the 275-member House of Representatives, RSP alone commands 182 votes.
Therefore, if RSP votes in favor, Rubee Kumari Thakur is almost certain to be elected as Deputy Speaker.
