Interim Prime Minister Susila Karki has suggested that Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Minister Kulman Ghising leave the government.
According to sources, during the cabinet meeting on Monday, PM Karki appreciated Ghising for his work in preparing the election environment while in the government and advised him to now focus on party activities and contest the upcoming elections. “You have done well in creating the election environment while in the government. Now, if you wish to contest the elections and work for your party, you may do so,” the source told Makalu Khabar.
Ghising had previously wanted to resign when he was establishing the Ujyalo Nepal Party, but PM Karki had asked him to complete ongoing government tasks first. In that party, Ghising was only a patron. Later, after an agreement to make him vice-chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), questions arose both within the cabinet and outside regarding his continued role in the government.
Sources said ministers themselves suggested to the Prime Minister that it would not be appropriate for someone in a leadership position of a political party to remain in a non-partisan interim government formed for elections. Following concerns raised both inside and outside the cabinet, PM Karki advised Ghising to step down.
Ghising has agreed to become vice-chair of the RSP but has not yet taken the oath. With his open entry into active politics, there is speculation that other ministers may also contest elections through political parties, though they have not yet clarified their intentions.
This interim government, formed after the Genzhi movement, is responsible for conducting the House of Representatives elections scheduled for the upcoming month of Falgun.
