National Democracy Day is being observed across Nepal today with various programs and ceremonies. The government has declared a public holiday on the occasion.
The day commemorates the end of the autocratic Rana regime and the establishment of democracy on Falgun 7, 2007 B.S. Building on the foundation laid on that day, democracy was reinstated on Chaitra 26, 2046 B.S., and later, full democracy was achieved on Baisakh 11, 2063 B.S.
On the same democratic foundation, the first Constituent Assembly declared Nepal a federal democratic republic on Jestha 15, 2065 B.S. The second Constituent Assembly promulgated the Constitution on Asoj 3, 2072 B.S., which came into implementation thereafter. Since Falgun 7 laid the groundwork for all these political transformations, Democracy Day is observed with special significance.
Although a federal democratic republic has been established on the foundation of democracy, public dissatisfaction has been growing, with many citizens feeling that their aspirations have not been fully met. Amid this dissatisfaction, youth staged protests on Bhadra 23 and 24. In the special political circumstances following the youth protests in Bhadra, the House of Representatives election is scheduled to be held on the 21st of this month.
