Kathmandu — Senior leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Balen Shah, is scheduled to take the oath of office and secrecy as Prime Minister on Friday at 12:34 PM, following the party’s majority win in the House of Representatives on Falgun 21.
Meanwhile, newly elected members of the House of Representatives will take their oath of office and secrecy on Thursday afternoon at the Federal Parliament building in Singha Durbar.
However, the government has not yet called a session of the Federal Parliament, which includes both the newly elected House of Representatives and the continuing National Assembly. As per legal provisions, the President summons the parliamentary session upon the recommendation of the government.
The interim government led by Sushila Karki has not yet made such a decision. Prime Minister Karki’s press advisor Ram Bahadur Rawal confirmed that no Cabinet meeting has been scheduled to recommend the session. “No decision has been made to convene the Federal Parliament session. The incoming government will likely handle it,” Rawal said.
Although there had been earlier discussions about calling the session on Chaitra 16, that possibility has now ended, as the law requires at least a week’s notice before convening a session.
Officials from the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers stated that the government must also determine the legislative agenda (“business”) before calling the session. Since the current interim government is outgoing, the process is expected to begin only after the new government takes office.
