Kathmandu — Police have arrested former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak following a government decision to implement the report of an তদন্ত commission led by Gauri Bahadur Karki.
Lekhak was arrested from his residence in Katunje, Bhaktapur, early Saturday morning at around 5:45 AM. A team from the Valley Crime Investigation Office, with support from the Armed Police Force, carried out the arrest based on an official warrant.
The arrest comes after intensive consultations held Friday night by Home Minister Sudan Gurung with heads of security agencies.
The commission had investigated the suppression of the Gen-Z protests held on Bhadra 23 and 24 and submitted its report to the interim government led by Sushila Karki. The report recommended criminal investigations against several officials, including former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and Lekhak, who were part of the Central Security Committee at the time.
Lekhak was serving as Home Minister during the protests on Bhadra 23, when police firing in New Baneshwor led to the deaths of teenagers. He resigned from his post later that same evening.
The Cabinet led by Prime Minister Balen Shah decided in its first meeting on Friday to implement the commission’s report, prompting immediate action.
Discussions were also held between Home Minister Gurung, Inspector General of Police Dhan Bahadur Karki, and Armed Police Force chief Raju Aryal regarding the arrests.
Meanwhile, an arrest warrant has also been issued against UML Chairman K.P. Sharma Oli in connection with the same case.
