Former Home Minister and Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak, who was arrested over allegations of suppressing the Janajati movement, has been taken to the government attorney’s office. Since Saturday was a public holiday, he was brought to the attorney’s office before being presented in court today. Former Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli is also being presented in court today.
During the Janajati movement on Bhadra 23–24, which turned violent, 76 people including three police officers lost their lives. Over 2,400 protesters were seriously injured. During the protests, several locations including Singha Durbar, the Parliament building, Supreme Court, President’s residence, police offices, commercial establishments, and private homes were set on fire, vandalized, and looted.
The inquiry commission led by Gauribahadur Karki, formed to investigate the incident, found then-Prime Minister Oli, then-Home Minister Lekhak, and other responsible officials guilty, recommending appropriate action.
Following the formation of Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s government on Chaitra 13 after the House of Representatives election on Falgun 21, the first cabinet meeting decided to immediately implement the inquiry commission’s report. Consequently, on the morning of Chaitra 14, police arrested Oli and Lekhak from their residences in Bhaktapur.
