Ram Bahadur Thapa has been unanimously elected as the parliamentary party leader of Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) (CPN-UML). The decision was made during a parliamentary party meeting held on Wednesday, where Thapa—who also serves as the party’s vice-chair—was chosen without opposition.
His contender, Suhang Nembang, failed to secure a proposer or seconder for his candidacy, leading to Thapa’s unopposed election.
After being selected, Thapa announced that the meeting had unanimously chosen him as the parliamentary party leader. He also shared that an orientation program for members of both the National Assembly and the House of Representatives has been scheduled for the 21st.
Thapa further informed that the meeting passed a proposal condemning what it described as the unlawful and prejudiced arrests of K. P. Sharma Oli and Ramesh Lekhak. He stated that the party is committed to strongly raising its agenda in upcoming parliamentary sessions and fulfilling the promises made in its manifesto. He emphasized that the party would play a vigilant and constructive opposition role.
Reacting to the outcome, Nembang said the result did not meet his expectations but acknowledged that another candidate was deemed more suitable for the position. He stressed that lawmakers should rise above the government-opposition divide and prioritize the nation’s and people’s interests.
Nembang had earlier claimed that leadership opportunities should be given to the new generation. The UML currently has 25 members in the House of Representatives.
