During the first meeting of the House of Representatives, the main opposition Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) objected to the arrest of its chair K. P. Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak.
UML lawmaker Guru Baral stood up in protest during the session. Speaker Arjun Narsingh KC then allowed him time to speak.
Addressing the House, Baral claimed that Oli and Lekhak had been detained in violation of the Constitution through the improper use of Sections 181 and 182 of the criminal procedure code. He called the arrests a serious matter of concern and demanded their immediate release.
“This is a grave issue. Protests are taking place across the country over this matter, and the government is carrying out harsh repression,” he said. “We demand the release of former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak today itself.”
