Ram Bahadur Thapa, parliamentary party leader of Communist Party of Nepal (UML), has objected to the arrest of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.
Speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives Nepal, Thapa said that figures he described as “champions of prosperity” were being portrayed as villains and murderers. He alleged that unseen forces—referring to “TOB, AI, and algorithms”—had played a decisive role in shaping narratives against leaders associated with nationalism, democracy, republicanism, federalism, peace, and prosperity.
He claimed that those who “set the country on fire” and sought to erase national identity were being elevated as heroes, while political leaders were being targeted through arrests. Thapa questioned the intent behind what he called a campaign of repression and “state terror” across the country.
Referring to incidents that took place on Bhadra 23 and 24, he raised further questions about who played decisive internal roles in what he described as an “unprecedented victory” under the leadership of Prime Minister Balen Shah. He went on to claim that institutions such as the Nepal Army, bureaucracy, “Sushila government,” and the Karki Commission had played key roles, and sarcastically extended congratulations to them on behalf of his party.
