The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nepal has confirmed that Nepali citizen Amrit Jha is safe while in custody in Iran.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Chhetri said that Jha is currently being held in an Iranian prison and legal proceedings against him are ongoing. According to Chhetri, Jha was arrested before tensions escalated in the Middle East.
“The court’s decision is still pending, so nothing can be said about the possible sentence at this stage,” Chhetri stated. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is trying to obtain further details. A lawyer has already met him, and he is safe.”
The ministry also reported that one Nepali national has died and 21 others have been injured.
Most of the injured individuals have returned after receiving basic medical treatment. The ministry further informed that, so far, information has been received that 11 Nepalis have been arrested.
