Members of the National Assembly have strongly objected to the government’s decision to declare a two-day public holiday. Speaking during Monday’s meeting, Bishnu Bahadur Bishwakarma urged the government to immediately withdraw the decision.
Bishwakarma argued that citing the Middle East war as a reason to close government offices and educational institutions was inappropriate. He said the decision would negatively affect both employees and students, potentially leaving them inactive for nearly three days.
“In a mountainous and poverty-stricken country like Nepal, most students walk to school,” he said. “It is inconsistent to keep public transportation running while shutting down schools.” He described the decision as one that could create disorder and strongly demanded its reversal.
Similarly, another National Assembly member, Sabitri Malla, objected to the recent increase in fuel and cooking gas prices and pressured the government to make immediate adjustments. She noted that the price hike by Nepal Oil Corporation, citing international factors, had raised transportation and freight costs, which in turn had significantly affected the prices of daily consumer goods.
According to Malla, rising inflation along with shortages of essential commodities has further burdened the general public. “Immediate steps must be taken to control fuel and gas prices and ensure essential goods remain easily available and affordable,” she said.
She emphasized that the government must take the issue seriously and provide relief to consumers through effective price control measures.
