Renowned Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle has passed away at the age of 92. She was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday after suffering a heart attack and respiratory complications. Despite treatment, she breathed her last on Sunday, according to Indian media reports citing the hospital.
Her last rites will be performed with full state honors on Monday at Shivaji Park.
Born on September 8, 1933, in Sangli, Bhosle was the third child of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. She began her singing career at the age of 10 and went on to lend her voice to more than 11,000 songs over a remarkable seven-decade career. In 2011, Guinness World Records recognized her as the artist who recorded the highest number of songs in the world.
She delivered unforgettable songs in hundreds of films, including Naya Daur, Teesri Manzil, Umrao Jaan, Ijaazat, and Rangeela. She received numerous prestigious honors, including two National Film Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2001), and the Padma Vibhushan. In 1997, she became the first Indian singer to be nominated for a Grammy Award.
