Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has said there is no alternative to holding elections on February 21 (Falgun 21) to bring the constitution back on track.
Speaking to journalists in Biratnagar on Wednesday, Koirala said that although his party wants elections to be held on time, the government has failed to create a proper environment for the polls. He claimed that the constitution has gone off track since the formation of the current government and warned that failure to hold elections on February 21 would lead to a serious constitutional crisis. For this reason, he said, the Nepali Congress is firmly insisting on timely elections.
Koirala further stated that if elections are not held within the scheduled time, the possibility of reinstating the parliament would become stronger. He also urged party members to be confident that he will contest for the party presidency in the upcoming general convention.
In a separate context, Koirala said that according to the Nepali Congress statute, Sher Bahadur Deuba is not eligible to become the party president again. He emphasized that the party’s general convention must be held within the stipulated time.
