The commission formed to investigate the suppression and damage during the Gen-Z movement has decided to summon former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak for statements next week.
Commission Chair Gauri Bahadur Karki said this on Wednesday while heading for discussions with Prime Minister Sushila Karki. Gen-Z movement leaders have been pressing for action against the then prime minister and home minister, accusing the former government of using excessive force during the protests on Bhadra 23.
Anger has been growing as no questioning has taken place even three months after the movement. Families of those who lost their lives have also filed complaints against Oli and Lekhak with the police, but the police have said they will decide on the matter only after receiving the commission’s report.
Only one week remains in the commission’s three-month mandate, which is set to expire on Poush 9. As the deadline approaches, commission officials met Prime Minister Karki on Wednesday to hold discussions.
Commission spokesperson Bigyan Raj Sharma said the meeting also discussed extending the commission’s term. “We have said we will assess how many more days are needed and inform the government,” he said, adding that it is not possible to complete the work within the current timeframe as key statements are still pending.
