The founding convention of the People First Party has begun today. The convention, which started on Friday, will continue for two days until Saturday. Speaking at the inaugural session of the founding convention, former Member of Parliament Sumana Shrestha said that Nepal’s political and social landscape has changed following the Gen Z movement. She emphasized that everyone must embrace the conduct, systems, and lifestyle that young people are seeking.
Shrestha said the country’s current situation has become increasingly worrying, noting that Nepal is witnessing a high migration rate similar to that of war-torn countries. She stressed the need to reform the education system and create employment opportunities to retain youth within the country, adding that there is very little time left to do so.
She said, “After the Gen Z movement, the country’s environment has changed. What kind of conduct do young people want, what kind of system do they want—this is something all of us must adopt. Looking back at events from Bhadra 23 and 24, we must ask what the condition of our state is. Our migration rate is like that of a country at war. To keep our youth in this country, we must reform education and create job opportunities, but there is not much time left.”
Shrestha also pointed out the need to clearly define and move forward with an understanding of the kind of development and lifestyle young people want. She said the role of political parties is not limited to winning elections or making laws, but also to creating new thinking and generating demand among the people for necessary change.
She said, “What kind of development do young people seek? What kind of lifestyle do we want? These questions must be clearly explained as we move forward. The role of a political party is not only to win elections or make laws; political parties and leadership must also create demand among the people.”
