Speaker of the House of Representatives Devaraj Ghimire held a farewell meeting on Sunday with Chen Song, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Nepal. The meeting, held at the Speaker’s office in Singha Durbar, focused on strengthening bilateral relations as well as expanding economic and development cooperation between the two countries.
Speaker Ghimire congratulated Ambassador Chen Song on the successful completion of his tenure and extended best wishes as he prepares to return to his home country. He highly appreciated the ambassador’s contribution to strengthening Nepal–China bilateral relations, expanding economic and development cooperation, and enhancing ties between the parliaments of the two countries. The Speaker also expressed confidence that Ambassador Chen’s stay in Nepal would remain pleasant and memorable.
Referring to the year-long celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and China, Speaker Ghimire said that various programs organized by both sides in 2025 have further elevated bilateral relations. He stated that Nepal and China have long remained good neighbors, close friends, and reliable partners, with relations progressing on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, mutual respect, cooperation, and understanding.
Speaker Ghimire reaffirmed Nepal’s full commitment to the One-China policy and expressed Nepal’s firm resolve not to allow any activities against China’s interests on Nepali soil.
During the meeting, the Speaker praised the support provided by the Chinese leadership in transforming Nepal from a landlocked country into a land-linked country. He also noted that regular exchanges and dialogue between the parliaments of Nepal and China have further broadened and strengthened bilateral relations.
Stating that Nepal is grateful for the generous development assistance provided by the Chinese government, Speaker Ghimire emphasized the need for the swift implementation of projects under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) agreement as well as other development assistance projects.
Ambassador Chen Song said that China gives high priority to Nepal in its diplomatic relations. He mentioned that significant progress had been made during his tenure in implementing agreements signed during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Nepal in 2020.
Ambassador Chen noted that while people-to-people relations between Nepal and China are strong, economic relations have yet to develop to their full potential. Recalling a recent Nepal–China economic cooperation and investment workshop, he said that many Chinese entrepreneurs are interested in investing in Nepal.
Ambassador Chen also said that the warm and positive cooperation he received from the Speaker and Nepal’s top leaders during his tenure in Nepal would always remain memorable.
