Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that the former government and the then Prime Minister must take full responsibility for the violent incident that occurred on Bhadra 23. Speaking at a program organized in Kathmandu, he described that day as an unimaginable and tragic “black day” in Nepal’s history.
Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives of many young people during the incident, Thapa said the violence took place when the youth generation (Gen-Z) took to the streets against corruption and poor governance. He argued that public anger spilling onto the streets was natural and emphasized that morality is the most important aspect for those holding public office.
“Political morality is extremely important. If I were in office, I would have taken full responsibility,” Thapa said. Stressing that those in higher positions bear greater responsibility, he added that the then Prime Minister cannot escape accountability.
Thapa also claimed that immediately after the incident, the Nepali Congress demonstrated moral responsibility by making the Home Minister resign. While technical investigations into the incident can take their own course, he said the head of the government must have the moral courage to say, “I take responsibility for this.”
He further said, “The morality of a person holding public office is a big issue. Political morality is an even bigger issue. No one becomes smaller by saying ‘I take responsibility.’ The one holding the highest position must shoulder greater responsibility. Investigations into how the incident happened may continue, but those in government must take responsibility for it.”
