A scuffle is currently underway between police and Gen-Z activists who attempted to stage a protest at Maitighar Mandala without permission.
The group led by Gen-Z activist Miraj Dhungana had announced a protest at Maitighar starting today. However, after the Kathmandu administration denied permission, police stopped Dhungana and other activists, leading to pushing and shoving at the site.
Kathmandu Chief District Officer (CDO) Ishwor Raj Paudel said that although Gen-Z groups had approached the administration seeking permission, it was decided not to grant approval. He added that on Monday, different Gen-Z groups submitted separate applications requesting permission to protest, but none were approved.
“Different letters have been submitted demanding permission to hold protests. The administration has not granted permission to anyone and will not do so,” CDO Paudel said.
The Dhungana-led group had announced the protest on Sunday and reached the administration on Monday seeking permission. Dhungana is the coordinator of the Gari Khan Deu (Let Us Earn) campaign. Following the announcement to demonstrate at Maitighar, police deployment in the area was increased.
Meanwhile, after denying permission for protests at Maitighar, the Kathmandu administration has instructed police to ask those gathered at the site to disperse. Through loudspeaker announcements, police have been urging people to leave the area, saying that programs can only be held after obtaining administrative permission and requesting those without permission to proceed to their respective destinations.
