CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli has said that although his party supports the reinstatement of the House of Representatives, it is also prepared to face elections and secure a majority if polls are held in a peaceful environment.
Addressing a program organized on Thursday to honor and distribute certificates to volunteers deployed during the party’s recently concluded 11th National General Convention, former Prime Minister Oli said that the UML is not against elections, but elections cannot be held amid fear and insecurity. He stated that the current situation does not indicate a conducive environment for elections and questioned the government’s role in creating such conditions.
“Right now, the environment for elections has not been created, nor does it seem likely,” Oli said. “It is the government’s responsibility to create that environment. We have not spoiled it. If the environment is created, we are ready to face any situation. We have not said we will kill or harm anyone. Despite widespread insecurity, even our security has been withdrawn. At times, attempts have been made to abduct people and launch attacks in the name of Gen Z.”
Oli urged youths to remain alert against forces trying to push the country backward and emphasized the responsibility of safeguarding national unity, democracy, and the constitution. He warned young people not to follow misguided thinking, bad influences, or personal selfish interests.
He also said he had participated in a meeting recently called by President Ram Chandra Paudel, where he made it clear that while the UML is not opposed to elections, it will not accept regressive moves. Oli stressed that the reinstatement of the House of Representatives should happen swiftly and that if elections are to be held on Falgun 21, an appropriate and peaceful environment must first be ensured.
