A case of fraud has come to light in which a fake WhatsApp account was created using the name and photo of Kathmandu Metropolitan Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol.
Warning the public, Deputy Mayor Dangol urged everyone to remain vigilant as scammers are seeking financial assistance through this fake account.
On Friday morning, she shared a screenshot on social media, clarifying that the WhatsApp account and number being used do not belong to her. According to her, the scammers have been sending e-Sewa QR codes, asking for money under the pretext of being in trouble.
Dangol stated that the matter has already been reported to the Nepal Police and telecommunications authorities, and legal action is underway. She appealed to the public not to engage in any financial transactions through the fake account.
In her message, she wrote: “I have been informed that my name and photo are being misused to demand money via a fake number. This is not me, and this is not my number. Please do not send any money or respond to such messages.”
Authorities have also urged people to stay cautious as incidents of fraud using the names of public officials via digital platforms are on the rise.
