Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Khaleda Zia, has passed away. She died at the age of 80 at 6:00 am local time on Tuesday.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Media Cell confirmed her death through a post on social media platform Facebook. According to the BNP, Khaleda Zia had been unwell for the past few months and was undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
The BNP had boycotted the last three general elections held in Bangladesh. In 2024, Khaleda had expressed her support for the student-led movement that began against then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Khaleda Zia had been ill for several months and was receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She remained active in Bangladeshi politics for more than four decades. After the assassination of her husband, she assumed leadership of the BNP.
Her husband, Ziaur Rahman, was assassinated in 1981 while serving as the President of Bangladesh. Khaleda Zia went on to become Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister in 1991.
