The two former Panchayat-era parties, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) led by Rajendra Lingden and RPP Nepal led by Kamal Thapa, are merging today. The parties had agreed to unite on Poush 9.
Accordingly, the merger is being formally announced on Wednesday at a ceremony held in the National Assembly Hall. The announcement program has already begun.
In the RPP general convention held in Mangsir 2078, Thapa and Lingden had contested for the party presidency, with Thapa losing by a wide margin. After his defeat, Thapa had accused the royal establishment of influencing the outcome.
Subsequently, in Magh 2078, he announced his departure from RPP and later, on Falgun 7, formed RPP Nepal. Since then, he had been leading a separate party.
