India has renewed the permission granted to Nepal to import 654 megawatts of electricity at competitive rates through the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX). The Central Electricity Authority under India’s Ministry of Power renewed the approval to import electricity round the clock (RTC) from the IEX Day-Ahead and Real-Time Markets. The validity of the previous permission was due to expire on Wednesday.
The Nepal Electricity Authority has received approval to import a total of 654 MW of electricity—600 MW through the Dhalkebar–Muzaffarpur 400 kV transmission line and 54 MW through the Tanakpur–Mahendranagar route—at competitive rates. The permission has been granted for the period from 17 Poush to 17 Chaitra (January 1 to March 31, 2026). The authority stated that the renewal for the period from 18 Chaitra to 15 Bhadra (April 1 to August 31, 2026) will be processed later.
Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Urban Development, Kulman Ghising, had called officials at India’s Ministry of Power on Tuesday, requesting the renewal of permission to allow electricity imports in RTC mode.
He said that receiving permission to import electricity in RTC mode would help effectively manage electricity demand and supply during the winter season.
