Former Prime Minister and senior leader of the Communist Party of Nepal, Jhalanath Khanal, has alleged that external powers, in collaboration with their local allies, are attempting to turn Nepal into a center of geopolitical conflict and make it a “second Ukraine.” Issuing a goodwill message on Thursday on the occasion of the English New Year 2026, Khanal expressed serious concern over the country’s current geopolitical situation and internal crisis.
He claimed that international imperialist forces are attacking Nepal’s sovereignty and the leftist movement under the guise of the “Gen Z movement” and other fronts. In his statement, Khanal strongly criticized the “Gen Z movement” that took place on Bhadra 24, describing it as a “massive act of destruction” carried out under the plan of domestic and foreign reactionary forces. He stated that arson, looting, and vandalism carried out in the name of the movement have pushed the country toward a deep national crisis.
Khanal further alleged that youth dissatisfaction is being exploited and that foreign money is being used to spread propaganda against socialism and political parties. He analyzed that the world order dominated by unilateral Western hegemony is on the verge of collapse and that a new, more just world order is taking shape. However, he concluded that this shift in the balance of power has increased external interference in countries like Nepal.
While welcoming the elections announced by the current government, Khanal expressed doubts about their fairness. He argued that elections conducted by a government formed in violation of the constitution do not provide a foundation for free and fair polls. Emphasizing that elections alone are not sufficient to resolve the ongoing crisis, he pointed out the need for constitutional amendments, good governance, and a concrete roadmap for job creation. For this, he stressed that scattered leftist, patriotic, and progressive forces must unite.
