General convention representatives demanding a special general convention of the Nepali Congress have called for the convention to be held on Poush 27–28, in accordance with Article 17 (2) of the party statute. Addressing a press conference today, they drew attention to the statutory provision that requires a special general convention to be held within three months of the registration of an application, meaning it must be convened by Poush 28.
The representatives, including Devaraj Chalise, Pramodhari Guragain, Manojmani Acharya, Subas Pokharel, and Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, made the demand after the party’s Central Working Committee had scheduled the regular general convention for Poush 26–28, but subsequently postponed the related programs.
They informed that if the 15th General Convention is not held within the statute-mandated deadline of Mangsir 2082 BS, a special general convention must be convened as per Article 17 (2). In this regard, on Ashoj 29, a total of 2,488 general convention representatives (54 percent) from across the country had submitted a signed application to the party’s central office demanding a special general convention.
They further stated that, in light of the special political situation following the events of Bhadra 23 and 24, they have consistently raised their voices for a special general convention to make the Nepali Congress stronger, more dynamic, and aligned with public sentiment, as well as to formulate timely policies and rebuild the party with renewed energy and leadership.
