Following the directive to recommend candidates for the House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21, CPN-UML has intensified the process of candidate recommendation through district and constituency committees across the country.
During the recommendation process, some constituencies have submitted a single candidate’s name, while others have forwarded multiple names to the central committee. In this context, the party has recommended Secretary Mahesh Basnet as the sole candidate from Bhaktapur Constituency No. 2.
Basnet was elected from the same constituency in the 2017 House of Representatives election but was defeated in 2022 by the Congress–Maoist alliance. Amid growing unrest under the banner of the “Janajati Nationalism” movement and attempts to impose unofficial restrictions on political parties, Basnet actively entered the political arena to oppose these measures. His active participation in political and street-level activities encouraged other CPN-UML leaders and political parties to become publicly active as well.
Meanwhile, CPN-UML leader Gokul Baskota has also been recommended as the sole candidate from Kavre Constituency No. 2. Baskota has previously been elected from the same constituency in the 2017 and 2022 elections. With single-name recommendations, it is almost certain that both Basnet and Baskota will contest the election from their respective constituencies, although the final decision rests with the party’s central leadership.
