An effigy of Nepali Congress leader Gagan Thapa was burnt in Janakpurdham on Tuesday evening. Leaders and cadres aligned with Nepali Congress leader Bimalendra Nidhi staged a protest, chanting slogans against Thapa and burning his effigy.
The protesters raised slogans such as “Down with Gagan Thapa” and “Long live Nepali Congress,” disrupting normal life at Pidari Chowk in Janakpurdham. Traffic came to a halt as vehicles were stopped on both sides during the demonstration.
Nepali Congress youth leader Rakesh Bikram said the protest was organized in response to the alleged mistreatment of leader Bimalendra Nidhi earlier in the day. He stated that the party teaches respect for all leaders and condemned the reported misconduct against Nidhi as wrong.
Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, supporters demanding a special general convention had surrounded the Nepali Congress central office in Sanepa, Kathmandu. Videos and news reports showing cadres surrounding and mistreating Nidhi when he arrived to attend a central executive committee meeting sparked anger among his supporters, leading to protests in Janakpurdham.
