Workers gathered at the Special General Convention venue in Bhrikutimandap turned angry after the Nepali Congress establishment faction took disciplinary action against three senior office-bearers, including the two general secretaries.
Following a Central Committee meeting held at the party office in Sanepa, the party decided to expel General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma, along with Joint General Secretary Farmullah Mansur, from the party. Soon after the decision, party workers assembled at Bhrikutimandap began chanting slogans against party president Sher Bahadur Deuba.
With the establishment faction announcing punishment that bars all three leaders from even ordinary party membership for five years, the Nepali Congress has formally moved toward the brink of a split. The disciplinary action, seen as targeting the group preparing to finalize leadership selection through the Special General Convention, has sharply intensified tensions within the party.
Before the decision was made public, the presence of leaders and workers at Bhrikutimandap was minimal. However, after news of the harsh action spread, the crowd swelled rapidly, with angry supporters strongly condemning what they described as an authoritarian style of leadership.
