The first meeting of the Nepali Congress Central Committee elected from the Special General Convention under the leadership of Gagan Thapa is being held today.
According to newly elected Co–General Secretary Udaya Shumsher Rana, the first meeting of the central committee elected under Thapa’s leadership will take place shortly at a banquet hall in Kupondole.
The second Special General Convention of the Nepali Congress, held at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu, concluded late at night, unanimously electing Thapa as party president and forming the new Central Working Committee.
The Special General Convention, held from Poush 27 to 30 at Bhrikutimandap, announced a 166-member working committee including 13 office bearers. With this development, the Nepali Congress has effectively split.
Meanwhile, the faction led by establishment president Sher Bahadur Deuba held a Central Working Committee meeting on Wednesday and announced disciplinary action against both General Secretaries, Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma, expelling them from the party for five years.
With this, a legal battle over party legitimacy between the two factions of the Nepali Congress appears imminent, with both sides likely to approach the Election Commission and the courts seeking official recognition.
