Former Prime Minister and patron of the Progressive Democratic Party, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, who is contesting the upcoming House of Representatives election, has begun internal party discussions on withdrawing his candidacy.
Bhattarai had filed his nomination from Gorkha–2 for the election scheduled to be held on Falgun 21. Earlier, he had publicly announced that he would not run as a candidate, but the party decided at the last moment to field him in the race.
However, after young candidates from other political parties in the constituency urged him to withdraw his candidacy, Bhattarai has started reconsidering his decision.
Today is the final day for withdrawing nominations.
According to party sources, many have suggested that it would be more appropriate for Dr. Bhattarai to play the role of a guardian rather than contest the election himself. It is for this reason that discussions on the matter have taken place within the party today.
