As the House of Representatives election draws closer, demand for eggs has increased, leading to a gradual rise in prices. The Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association has increased egg prices effective from today.
According to the new rates, the farm price of large eggs has reached NPR 495 per crate (30 eggs). Previously, large eggs were sold at NPR 465 per crate, marking an increase of NPR 30. Similarly, the farm price of medium-sized eggs has been fixed at NPR 475 per crate, up from the earlier price of NPR 445.
Egg prices had reached a record high in Mangsir last year, when large eggs were sold at NPR 565 per crate at the farm level, while medium-sized eggs were priced at NPR 550 per crate.
Association President Binod Pokharel said the current price increase is due to the election atmosphere in Nepal and stricter controls along border areas during the election period. He added that a decline in the number of egg-laying hens, reduced egg production, and the reopening of previously closed schools have also contributed to the gradual improvement in egg prices.
The production cost of one egg is estimated at NPR 19.12. Based on this, the cost price per crate comes to approximately NPR 574.06. Farmers had become discouraged after prices fell again despite nearing the cost price. However, with the recent increase, farmers are now hopeful that prices will continue to improve. The association stated that it sets a support price for eggs based on market conditions.
