Twenty-one students were injured after a school bus met with an accident in Rupandehi due to low visibility caused by dense morning fog. The collision occurred on Tuesday morning at Basantpur in Omsatiya Rural Municipality–4, when a school bus and a tractor crashed into each other.
The bus was carrying students of Grades 11 and 12 studying at Shanti Namuna Secondary School in Manigram. According to police, the bus was hit by a tractor loaded with paddy that was coming from the opposite direction.
The District Police Office, Rupandehi, said the bus bearing registration number Lu 1 Kha 8675 was traveling from Nawalparasi to Bhairahawa, while the tractor with registration number Lu 3 Ta 3530 was heading in the opposite direction. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ganesh Sapkota stated that preliminary investigation suggests the accident occurred because drivers were unable to clearly see the road due to thick fog in the early morning.
Among the 21 injured students, 13 are undergoing treatment at Universal Medical College in Bhairahawa, while four are being treated at Bhim Hospital, Bhairahawa. The remaining four students sustained minor injuries and were discharged after receiving first aid.
Police have taken both the bus and tractor drivers into custody for further investigation. Traffic police have urged drivers to exercise caution, noting that the risk of road accidents has increased in recent days across Tarai districts due to cold waves and dense fog.
