Thousands of people in Israel demonstrated to demand an end to the Gaza conflict and the release of hostages held by Hamas. The largest crowd gathered on Sunday at “Hostages Square” in Tel Aviv.
Organizers of the protest warned that government plans to control Gaza City put the lives of around 20 hostages held by Hamas at risk.
As part of the widespread demonstration, a one-day national strike was held, leading to closures of roads, offices, and universities in some areas. Around 40 people were arrested during the day-long protests.
The strike was organized in support of the hostages’ families and by groups opposing the expansion of the war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the protests, stating they would “harden Hamas’ stance” and only delay the release of the hostages.
