Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said that the contribution of women who worked in underground politics during Nepal’s democratic movements and political transformations is invaluable.
Speaking at a program organized by the Motidevi Memorial Center on the occasion of the 116th International Women’s Day, Bhandari emphasized that the state and society should always remember the contributions made by women during the most difficult periods of history.
During the event, she also unveiled a book and documentary titled “Class Liberation, Gender Equality and Social Justice Warriors: Underground Women.” She praised the significant role played by women in the progressive transformation of society.
Comparing those who reached leadership positions in political change to the pinnacle of a temple, she said the efforts of the women who laid the foundation must also be remembered.
Bhandari noted that although the temple’s pinnacle may shine brightly, the sweat and hard work of the hands that built the foundation beneath it remain equally important and deserving of respect.
She added that Nepal’s Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal stands on the foundation built by such fighters and expressed confidence that documenting these historical contributions will inspire future generations to move forward on the path of justice, equality, and freedom.
