CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has said that the recent agreement between India and China to open the Limpiyadhura border point for trade, without Nepal’s consent, has ignored Nepal’s sensitive concerns.
Speaking at a press conference organized by Press Chautari Nepal, Mahottari, in Bardibas on Thursday, Pokharel stated, “We prepared the map including the territory west of the Mahakali based on facts and truth, in line with the 1816 Sugauli Treaty.” He added that although Nepal was not consulted in the latest agreement, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s goodwill visit to India and China would not be halted because of this issue.
“We seek to resolve every problem through mutual dialogue and discussions, and such opportunities for dialogue arise during goodwill visits,” Pokharel said, making it clear that Nepal would not block the visits.
He further noted that Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already sent a diplomatic note to both India and China expressing its disagreement on the Lipulekh issue, and now the two friendly neighbors must provide a logical conclusion.
Highlighting UML’s main objective as political stability and prosperity, Pokharel said the party’s current activities are focused on this goal. He is in Bardibas to participate in discussions with Madhes Province leaders regarding the political, organizational, and statutory amendments to be presented at the upcoming Statute General Convention.
