
India has agreed to purchase 80 megawatts of electricity generated from two hydropower projects in Nepal. The Indian government has also approved further electricity imports from Nepal.
With this new approval, Nepal’s total export capacity to India has reached 1,090.9 MW, up from the previous 1,010.9 MW. Including 40 MW already approved for export to Bangladesh, Nepal’s overall export approval now stands at 1,130.9 MW.
Most recently, on August 10 (Shrawan 26), India granted approval to purchase 200 MW of electricity. On Thursday, India approved the purchase of an additional 80 MW.
The latest medium-term approval under the bilateral agreement is valid from August 21, 2025, to October 31, 2026. The new approval covers electricity generated by the Mewa Khola Hydropower Project (48.5 MW) and the Karuwa Seti Hydropower Project (31.04 MW).
