CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has claimed that former President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s possible return to active party politics would pose a threat to the republican system.
Speaking at a press conference organized by Press Chautari Dang on Saturday, Pokharel argued that once someone has held the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Army and guardian of the Constitution, returning to party politics could spread distrust towards the republic.
“A former President is the guardian of the Constitution, and also the supreme commander of the army,” Pokharel said. “If such a person re-enters active politics, it creates doubt and distrust in the republic. Parties should not make such mistakes.”
He also criticized the CPN (Maoist Centre) for bringing former Vice President Nanda Kishor Pun back into active politics, calling it a mistake. According to Pokharel, since the Maoist party is still “learning democracy,” both the UML and Nepali Congress need to teach them democratic values.
Pokharel further urged the Maoist Centre to correct its decision regarding the return of the former Vice President to politics.
