From today, the year 2083 in the Bikram Sambat calendar has officially begun. On this first day of the New Year, Nepalis in Nepal and abroad are celebrating with joy, exchanging greetings and good wishes with one another.
According to the Bikram Sambat system, each New Year starts on the 1st day of the month of Baisakh. As the calendar is based on the solar system, the months are also linked to the names of planets and constellations.
Nepal’s calendar system is associated with the solar cycle. When the Earth completes one full orbit around the Sun, it coincides with Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, and the Sun transitions from Pisces (Meen Rashi) into Aries (Mesha Rashi). This moment marks the beginning of the New Year and is also referred to as the Sun’s zero degree point.
On the occasion of the New Year, a public holiday has been declared across Nepal for government offices, public institutions, and educational institutions.
People traditionally celebrate the New Year as a special festival by sharing sweets, organizing cultural programs, and expressing wishes for success and prosperity. It is also customary on this day to make new plans, take positive resolutions, and begin new endeavors.
