Election for House of Representatives Committee Chairs Scheduled for April 17
The election of chairpersons for the thematic committees under Nepal’s House of Representatives is set to take place on April 17 (Baisakh 4). The Federal Parliament Secretariat has already published the election schedule for these committees, often referred to as “mini parliaments.”
According to the schedule, proposals to elect a member as chairperson of a respective committee can be registered on Thursday between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. As informed by Federal Parliament (House of Representatives) Secretary Harkaraj Rai, each proposal must include one proposer and one supporter, both of whom must be members of the same committee.
A list of registered proposals will be published the same day by 4:30 PM in the order of registration. On Friday at 1:00 PM, the respective committees will convene meetings where the proposer will present the motion, the supporter will endorse it, and the proposal will then be put to a decision.
The Secretariat has also requested that ministers who are members of more than one committee notify the concerned committee in writing at least 24 hours before the election if a voting situation arises.
Under the Federal Parliament, there are 10 committees in the House of Representatives, four in the National Assembly, and two joint committees. The House committees include Law, Justice and Human Rights; Agriculture, Cooperatives and Natural Resources; Infrastructure Development; Women and Social Affairs; State Affairs and Good Governance; Education, Health and Information Technology; Public Accounts; Finance; International Relations and Tourism; and Industry, Commerce, Labour and Consumer Welfare.
The joint committees include the Parliamentary Hearing Committee and the Committee for Monitoring and Evaluation of the Implementation of Directive Principles, Policies, and Obligations of the State.
