The Chaurchan festival is being observed in the Mithila region today with devotees performing moon worship in the evening. The festival, regarded as one of faith and devotion, is popularly known as Chaurchan in villages across Mithilanchal, while in some places it is also referred to as the Chauth Chandra festival.
According to culture expert Dhruva Raya, the occasion brings family members together to dine in a single gathering, strengthening mutual bonds. Women observe a day-long fast without food or water and break it only after performing moon worship at night.
As per tradition, various fruits, sweets, curd, puri, and kheer are prepared for the festival. Rajwati Devi, a devotee from Jaleshwar Municipality–8, said that women end their fast after offering prayers to the moon.
After the rituals, family members one by one take offerings of fruits to gaze upon the moon. The celebration concludes with everyone sitting together in the courtyard to enjoy kheer, puri, curd, and sweets.
