Due to continuous rainfall, the water flow in the Saptakoshi River has surged significantly. On Sunday evening, the flow at the Koshi Barrage was measured at 191,210 cusecs per second. As of this morning, the flow remains high, recorded at 175,685 cusecs per second, according to Armed Police Force Superintendent Nirmal Thapa.
Out of the 56 sluice gates at the barrage, 23 have currently been opened to manage the water flow. When the flow exceeds 150,000 cusecs, a red warning light is activated to alert the public. The control room at the Koshi Barrage has confirmed that the red warning light is currently on.
Authorities are taking the current situation seriously, as a similar water flow of 168,000 cusecs on Bhadra 2, 2065 BS (August 2008) had caused the eastern embankment of the Saptakoshi to breach, leading to devastating floods.
