The movement of heavy vehicles through the Banbasa Bridge, which connects Nepal and India, has been suspended after a surge in water flow in the Mahakali River led authorities to restrict traffic across the Sharada Barrage.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sagar Bohara, spokesperson for the Kanchanpur District Police Office, water flow at the flood measurement center near Banbasa Bridge was recorded at 145,029 cusecs at 12:45 PM on Friday.
Authorities said that since the Banbasa permanent bridge (Sharada Barrage) is structurally weak, vehicular movement is halted whenever the water flow exceeds 100,000 cusecs. Continuous rainfall since Thursday in Kanchanpur and hilly districts of Sudurpaschim Province has caused the Mahakali River’s water level to rise significantly.
