Kathmandu – Medical education reform activist Dr. Govinda KC has ended his hunger strike.
Dr. KC concluded his 22nd fast-unto-death at 2 PM today by drinking juice offered by patient Pritam Chaudhary at Geta Medical College, where he was undergoing treatment.
Dr. KC had been on strike since last Sunday, and his health had been deteriorating, with irregular heartbeat, muscle pain, and twitching reported on Tuesday morning, according to his aide Dr. Amrit Jaisi. Despite medical advice for further treatment, he had initially refused but agreed to break his fast at the request of a patient.
He began his hunger strike in protest against the recent decision of the Medical Education Commission, which on July 30 decided to increase the number of MBBS seats in private medical colleges to 130. Dr. KC rejected the move, calling it a “low-quality, mafia-driven decision” against the interests of medical education.
