Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has stated that the Constitution does not prevent former President and Vice President from returning to active politics.
Speaking to journalists at Biratnagar Airport on Saturday, Deuba noted that the political engagement of former President Bidya Devi Bhandari and former Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun is not prohibited by the Constitution.
He emphasized that since the Constitution does not restrict affiliation with political parties, their involvement in politics should not be considered unusual. While Bhandari, who has returned to active politics with the UML, will not have her party membership renewed, Pun has already become active in the CPN (Maoist Centre).
Responding to questions, Deuba said, “The Constitution does not prohibit it anywhere. Nor does it say it is impossible. Therefore, there is no question of undermining the Constitution.” Regarding constitutional amendments, he stated that the process would proceed only after securing a two-thirds majority and that discussions with political parties are ongoing. He added that no concrete conclusions have yet been reached.
Deuba also clarified that the Nepali Congress has not discussed recalling ministers or sending new ones under the government led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. “There has been no talk of recalling ministers. How did you find out? I don’t know,” he told reporters.
