The Nepal Panchang Nirnayak Bikas Samiti has announced that a total lunar eclipse will occur tonight. According to the approved calendar (Panchang), the eclipse will begin at 10:11 p.m.
The peak of the eclipse will occur at 11:56 p.m., and it will end at 1:41 a.m., former chair of the committee, Prof. Shreekrishna Adhikari, informed. The eclipse will last for about three and a half hours and will be clearly visible from Kathmandu.
This event, referred to as the “Corn Moon Eclipse” (Makai Chandra Grahan), falls on Bhadra 22 in the Nepali calendar. It is the first eclipse of the Nepali year 2082. Another partial lunar eclipse will occur on the full moon day of Falgun, the committee added.
As per traditional beliefs, children, the elderly, and the sick are exempt, but others are advised not to eat during the eclipse period. According to scriptures, meals should be avoided from 1:11 p.m. on Sunday until the eclipse ends.
Lunar eclipses generally occur on the full moon, while solar eclipses occur on the new moon (Amavasya).
