The Nepali Congress has urged its party members to remain united and actively work for the restoration and protection of the democratic process. The appeal comes in the wake of the situation created by the ongoing GenZ protests.
“There is no alternative to the rule of law, and no alternative to democracy,” spokesperson Prakash Sharan Mahat said in a statement, adding, “In this complex situation, it is essential for all party members to unite and instill confidence and trust. We must all once again be active for the restoration and preservation of the democratic process.”
Mahat emphasized that there is no doubt Nepali Congress remains the most reliable force for democracy. He stressed the need for immediate dialogue with other parties committed to democracy and the constitution.
Highlighting that the party must play an active role in national dialogue and initiatives under the leadership of the state, Mahat pointed out the urgency of safeguarding peace, security, constitutional order, and the institutional restoration of democracy.
Stating that the country is facing political vacuum and legal uncertainty, the Congress urged that security agencies, under the coordination of the President, must be mobilized to maintain law and order.
The party also expressed concern that acts of vandalism, arson, and violence across the country have gone beyond the norms and values of democratic protest.
“Young people committed to the country, the people, and democracy never wanted this,” the statement said. “The burning of the executive, legislature, and judiciary—fundamental pillars of democracy—is alarming.”
The Congress strongly condemned arson, vandalism, and looting targeting private homes, properties, industries, and businesses. Mahat remarked that the one-day damage surpassed that of the 10-year Maoist insurgency.
He further warned that such incidents have harmed the investment climate, adding that recovery would take years and require significant resources. Mahat also condemned the brutal attacks on party president Sher Bahadur Deuba and other leaders.
